How to Find Low Competition Keywords You Can Rank Quickly

Are you struggling to grow your blog with organic traffic? If so, I am going to show you how to find low competition keywords you can rank for quickly.

how to find low competition keywords

Google traffic is huge for anyone who wants to build passive profits. It sucks when you work so hard and you can’t seem to get your organic traffic to grow.

Trust me, I’ve written well over 100 articles on this blog that are targeting keywords that are too competitive. This means that no matter what I do, they will never rank on the first page of Google.

Heck, some of them aren’t even ranking on the 100th page of Google. Which sucks because I wasted to much time chasing keywords that I never should have.

I don’t want that to happen to you, and the best part is that it doesn’t have to. If you learn how to the right keywords, it can make the whole difference in the world.

So don’t make the same mistake I made. Since using this tool, I’ve managed to increase my organic traffic by over 700% in just two months.

The great thing is that it is only going to continue growing as Google finds my content. Now, let me show you how I do it, so you can do it too.

What Is Keyword Competition?

A keyword is nothing more than a search term that someone types into the search engines to look up information on a topic. If you’re lucky enough to choose the right keywords and rank on the first page of Google, you’ll get traffic to your blog.

There are 3.5 billion searches per day on Google. If you can get just a small percentage of that, you won’t have any problems making money, growing your email list or just creating a profitable passive blog.

This is why it’s so important to choose the right keywords. You want to get on that first page of Google, without worrying about building backlinks.

I personally hate building backlinks and refuse to do it for my blog. Plus, I’d rather stay on Google’s good side and do things the right way this time around.

If you choose keywords that are too fierce, you’ll NEVER rank on the first page. Well, you might, but it may take years and tons of backlinks.

I’m assuming that you don’t want to wait 5 years before you start seeing money from your blog?

My Current Strategy For New Content

Now before I jump in and show you how I find keywords for my blog, I need to tell you about my strategy.

My blog is now two years old, but I am in a cutthroat niche, which means that tons of other bloggers have a higher DA score than little ole me. Since I hate building links, I need to find a different way to see success.

I’ve decided that I am NO longer going to be chasing those search terms that get thousands of searches per month.

Why?

Well, because I’ve already written tons of blog posts for those types of search terms and guess what, I don’t even rank on the 100th page.

So that means that I needed to tweak my strategy. I now chase those search terms that the bigger bloggers don’t want to waste time on.

You know the phrases that get like 50 – 300 searches per month. Heck, I’ve even written some blog posts for keywords that get less than 50 searches per month.

I know what you’re thinking, I’m just wasting my time going after the small numbers. Well, yes and no.

A Look At My Analytics Since Changing My Strategy

I’d love to go after those terms that get thousands of searches per month because that would mean that I don’t need as much content.

But I can’t seem to get anywhere using that method. Since I’ve started focusing on those low search terms that bigger bloggers don’t touch, take a look at how much my organic traffic has grown.

Plus, I made the mistake of wasting too much time ignoring SEO. I only started really focusing on SEO the past 6 or 7 months. Don’t wait that long to SEO your blog posts.

Oh and this is without me wasting time building backlinks. If I built backlinks, I probably could grow faster, but I just don’t want to do it.

If you’ve found yourself in the same boat I was in, it’s time to learn how to find the right keywords you can actually rank for.

How to Find Low Competition Keywords Using KWFinder

I am going to show you exactly how I use KWFinder to help me create a low competition keywords list that I can turn to whenever I sit down to write new content for my blog.

Heck, you can even use this tool to help you find a list of untapped niches. I’ve already found some that I’ve been saving for when I am ready to build another niche site.

Today, though I’m going to show you how I use the keyword analyzer tool to help me find the right search phrases for my blog.

Sign up for your free account here and follow along. If you actually sit down to write content based on the words you find, I have no doubt you’ll see results.

Once you’re logged into your account, you’ll want to enter a seed keyword that is related to your topic.

Finding Easy to Rank Keywords With KWFinder

For this example, I am going to pretend that I have a website that is about a home coffee roaster. My goal is to brainstorm for search terms that are related to coffee that I can actually rank for and will drive traffic to my fake website 🙂

I started with the seed word “coffee” but we all know that I’d never be able to rank for the word coffee. So after doing a couple of in-depth searches, I found “home coffee roaster.”

This phrase gets 5317 searches and has a 24/100 Green Score. Which shows that with some hard work and time, you and I could realistically rank for this term.

You want to focus on long tail keywords. These are search phrases that have 3 or more words because they are easier to rank for and they are considered buying words.

home coffee roaster low competition

You could literally take that keyword and register a domain like “home roasters” or something related to get your blog set up.

Next, you’d want to find a list of phrases that you can turn to whenever you write a new blog post. The bigger the list, the more you can focus on writing and not brainstorming.

The cool thing is that KWFinder makes it easy to create a list with search terms you want to write about later.

Brainstorming a List of Potential Keywords

It takes time to come up with a list of potential keywords you can write articles on. But if you actually take the time to find good ones, it will pay off huge.

I’ve entered the phrase into the search box on KWFinder and hit enter. Then I spent about 5 minutes browsing related terms.

This brings up tons of results but several of them are too fierce, so you want to weed those out.

Make sure that you understand the color code system for KWFinder.

color code 0-99

I am always chasing the green score. The current DA on my website is 31 and I could probably rank for the ones with the orange color, but I like a sure bet.

Low Competition Keywords List

I’ve put together a list of words that anyone can literally use today and rank pretty quick. If you already have a blog and it has some authority, it won’t take long to see results.

If your site is brand new then you’d need to give it time to start seeing results. But if you write amazing content that pleases Google, (don’t worry, I’ll reveal what I do) it’s a sure bet that you’ll rank over time.

  1. French press coffee: 49533 searches – 21/100 Green Score (this is a great one)
  2. How to make green coffee at home: 50 searches – 12/100 Green Score
  3. Medium dark roast coffee: 90 searches – 18/100 Green Score
  4. Best light roast ground coffee: 40 searches – 16/100 Green Score
  5. Types of coffee roasts: 667 searches – 17/100 Green Score
  6. Best green coffee beans for home roasting: 70 searches – 15/100 Green Score

Once you start finding potential search phrases, you want to make sure that you create a list and save them for when you’re ready to start writing.

How to Create A List On KWFinder

It’s so easy, all you do is check the checkbox or click on the star next to the keyword you want to save. Once you do that, a popup will ask you to save to an existing list or you can create one.

create a new list

If you check the checkbox, you’ll want to scroll to the bottom of the list where you see a button that says “add to list.”

That’s it, now you can brainstorm for several hours and add all those low hanging nuggets in your new list you created.

Now You Sit Down and Write Content

So you’ve uncovered a huge list of no competition keywords. Now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and get busy.

After all, they are NOT going to do anything for you if you don’t actually write the content targeting those search terms.

I’m going to show you exactly how I write my content. This is the same strategy that I’ve been using to please Google and see my rankings increase.

Feel free to experiment other ways, after all, we all know there are several ways to accomplish things online.

How I Write My Content

Once I have a term I want to target for my blog post, I head on over to CoSchedule Headline Analyzer to help me come up with a great headline.

You want to target each blog post for only one keyword from your list. Once I have a clickable headline, it’s time to find some LSI semantic keywords.

Don’t worry about paying for that tool, you get 3 free searches daily. So make sure you make the most of them.

I head on over to LSIGraph and enter the term that I am targeting. You’ll get a list of LSI search terms that you can sprinkle inside of your article. Only use a word or phrase if it actually makes sense, don’t try to force it.

I always paste the list of LSI words into a blank text document that I keep open on one side of my monitor so I can refer to it easily while writing.

lsisearch terms

As soon as I use one of the keywords on the list, I will highlight it a different color. This way I know which terms I’ve used in my articles.

Downloading a Free Extension

If you’re using content marketing as your method of promotion, you need to download the free Keywords Everywhere extension for either Firefox or Chrome.

This tool is awesome at giving you:

  • Related Keywords
  • People Also Search for Terms

keywords everywhere related terms

Yup, you guessed it, you want to add those into your article if they fit.

Checking Google

Last but not least, I check what Google is telling me is related to the search phrase I am writing for. All you have to do is copy and paste your targeted keyword you’re writing about into the Google search box.

Now place your cursor next to your keyword and you’ll see a dropbox that opens up.

google related keywords

You guessed it, sprinkle some of these keywords into your article. Google is telling you that these are related to your topic, so make sure that you don’t disappoint them.

You can also scroll to the bottom and find searches related to your topic.

People Also Ask

Oh, and Google also tells you what people are also asking about the topic you’re wanting to rank for. Scroll down after you enter your phrase into Google and you’ll see a box of questions that people are typing into Google.

people also ask

You can add those questions as H2 or H3 headlines in your post. Or you can write a brand new blog post based on those questions after all people are searching for those terms.

I’m not really sure how well you’ll rank or how competitive those search terms are, so you’ll definitely want to check that out.

SEO Optimizing Your Blog Post

Okay, you have this huge list of keywords and LSI search terms in front of you. How the heck do you optimize your blog post?

Well, I’ve written a tutorial that shows you how I use the Yoast SEO Plugin for my blog. You don’t want to live or die by the results, you just want to use it as a basis.

If you want to make money with your content, you need to make sure you’re adding affiliate links to your blog posts. You don’t want to spam your readers, but I always recommend monetizing all your posts.

This free training will show you how to strategically add your affiliate links without being pushy and driving your visitors bananas.

How Many Times to Use Your Target Word

In the past, you could guarantee high rankings if you stuffed your article with the word you were trying to rank for. Today, you don’t want to do that because it will only lead to being penalized by Google.

I personally only use my keyword in the very first paragraph of the article. Then I’ll use it once more in an H2 title tag.

Once I use it in those spots, I don’t use it anymore. I focus on using LSI words and just writing like I am talking to a friend.

You don’t have to keep your keyword over and over again. Google will know what you’re trying to rank plus with the RankBrain algorithm you’ll be able to rank for several different terms.

How Long Should Your Content Be?

Google favors long-form content, but you don’t want to just add a bunch of fluff. You want to make it as long as it needs to be to cover the topic that you’re writing about.

Most of the articles on my blog are in the 2000 range or more. If you’re writing in-depth articles that cover your topic, you’ll be fine.

Promote Your Content

Once you’ve written your post, it’s time to promote it. Even if you did your research correctly and found some low hanging search terms, you can’t expect to see rankings right away.

It can take anywhere from a couple weeks or months to see rankings. I’ve seen my site start to rank in Google in as little as 3 days. But it seems to take forever to reach page one 🙂

So don’t sit in limbo and wait on Google. You need to get out there and hustle and promote your blog. Here’s a blog post checklist of where you can submit your post for free after writing it.

Keep An Eye On Rankings

If you’re using SEO as a strategy to drive traffic to your blog, you need to pay attention to your rankings.

KWFinder makes it so easy with their SerpWatcher feature. You can read about how to set it up in my KWFinder review blog post.

Make sure that you add the phrases that you’re trying to rank for and once you start ranking in Google, you’ll see your post climb the search engines.

It’s exciting when you are picking the right terms that are driving you traffic and making you money.

This tool will help you spy on your competitors and see what their websites are ranking for. It’s more expensive but does a whole lot more, I plan on writing a review on it in the near future.

Check out how I use it for free to help me update my old blog posts to get more traffic.

Final Take Away

I know this sounds like a lot and you’re probably tempted to skip the process and just start writing. Don’t do that because you’ll end up wasting tons of time chasing rankings that you’ll NEVER be able to get.

You need to understand the importance of keyword research if you want to cut your learning curve in half. Otherwise, you’ll be like me and realize that you wasted over a year of just writing a bunch of articles that will never rank high in the search engines.

Oh and make sure that you give it time to work. You’re not going to see results right away. You’re building a business and it takes time to see results from your hard work.
