How to start a wedding blog and actually make money with it. More and more people are turning to the Internet in hopes of earning an income. In this post, I am going to share some tips with you on how to start your wedding blog.

how to start a wedding blog

If you have access to a computer and the Internet, you can start a blog in any niche. The wedding niche is huge and can easily be monetized to help you earn money blogging.

In this tutorial, I am going to walk you through the entire process of how to start a blog in the wedding niche. At the end of this post, you will have a brand new blog set up SiteGround with a plan to start writing your first blog post.

I’ll even cover some amazing themes and plugins that will help your site look like a million dollars. There’s absolutely no reason to spend a lot of money on your blog.

How to Start Your Wedding Blog In 3 Easy Steps

Regardless of whether you’re tech savvy or not, you can set up your own self-hosted WordPress blog in the wedding niche in just a half an hour or less. Follow this tutorial to get your wedding blog set up.

After the 3 step guide, I will also be sharing a step-by-step tutorial that I created in case you want to watch over my shoulder. Oh and I can’t forget to tell you about my Kindle eBook WordPress Complete Beginners Guide: A Reference Guide to Help You Set Up Your First WordPress Blog.

1 Choose and Buy Your Domain

Chances are you have already been brainstorming some ideas to use for your domain. If you are brand new to blogging and don’t know what a domain (also referred to as a URL), it is just the address of your website.

When you register your domain, you will be working hard to build your brand online. Many people register a .com or a .net to make it easy for people to remember. I personally prefer the .com extension, but that’s just me πŸ™‚

Before you register your domain, head on over to Knowem.com to see if your social media handles are available. One of the biggest mistakes I made when I registered my blog is I didn’t do my due diligence before registering my domain.

Once you have purchased your domain, you can move on to step two.

#2 Sign Up for Hosting

First things first, before you can start your wedding blog, you’re going to need to sign up for hosting. I use and recommend SiteGround to host your new blog.

  • It’s easy to use
  • Signing up just takes minutes
  • They offer excellent 24/7 customer support
  • Offer built-in WordPress Caching
  • Built-in CDN Integration
  • Extremely affordable (you get the best discounts at sign up)

I have been using them for over a year and I have never had any issues. Well, I did run into some CPU shortage issues, but once I installed the Bad Hole for Bad Bots Plugin, everything has been awesome.

When you start your blog, you don’t want to pay ridiculous prices just for hosting. It’s going to take a while to grow your blog, so if you can save money on your hosting, that’s awesome.

Pick up your hosting here and I will see you on the step three.

#3 Install WordPress

You’re almost done setting up your new wedding blog. This is the final step and then you can start writing your first blog post. Now you need to install WordPress on SiteGround. WordPress is the software that you will be using to run your wedding blog site.

Installing WordPress for the first time can be challenging, especially, if you have never worked with it before. That’s why I created a simple video that will walk you through step-by-step so you can watch over my shoulder. Sometimes is just easier when you can watch someone do it.

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial that will show you how to install WordPress manually with screenshots. So pick one to follow and then come back here for some more beginner tips on how to start a wedding blog.

Tips for Beginner Wedding Blogger

Use Photos

Everyone loves looking at wedding photos. Make sure that you use plenty of amazing photos that show off the bride and the groom. Everyone loves to hear stories about amazing weddings, that’s why everyone is so interested in the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wedding.

Oh and don’t forget to use wedding videos as well. If you can link to some amazing wedding videos like this one about the JK Wedding Entrance Dance video, it will definitely help people stay on your blog longer.

Be Consistent

One of the biggest things to remember when you start a blog is that consistency matters. Most new will blog consistently for their first 2-3 months because they are excited about their new project. However, once they start realizing how much work goes into growing a blog, they stop writing.

They start writing only when they feel like they should. Blogging is hard and you should strive to write 2-3 blog posts per week. This will give you enough time to work on the promotion side of your blog.

Know Your Readers

We hear it all the time, create your avatar. Make sure that you are writing content that helps your readers. At first when you start your blog, you will start writing content that you like. Once you start getting visitors you can check your Google Analytics to see what type of blog posts are resonating with your readers.

Work On Promotion At the Beginning

One of the biggest mistakes that I made with my blog is that I waited until it was 6 months old before I started promoting it. Don’t believe that saying “If you build it they will come.”

You are going to have to get off your blog and start networking with other bloggers. Let others know that you have just started a wedding blog.

I know what you’re thinking. I don’t know how to promote a blog.

Related: How to Use Pinterest for Business

Well, guess what? Most new bloggers don’t know half of the tasks that it takes to grow a blog. None of us were born bloggers or marketers.

Unfortunately you are just going to have to learn. Here is what I am going to help me grow my blog. Start there and then keep finding other methods to help you drive traffic to your blog. Remember, no traffic means no people to buy your products, services or click on your affiliate links.

Best Themes for Your Wedding Blog

Whatever you do, don’t hire a designer. I know that you want an amazing blog that grabs people’s attention. Most new bloggers end up spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a new custom blog.

The truth is that there are plenty of WordPress themes that you can use right out of the gate that will look amazing. Once you get the hang of blogging and your blog is paying for itself. Then you can decide if you want to hire a designer.

At the beginning, all you need is a good looking site with amazing content. Oh and you do want to make sure that your site is mobile friendly. The cool thing is that most WordPress themes today are mobile friendly right out of the gate.

Free Themes

Not ready to spend money on your new wedding blog. No worries, here are some free wedding themes that can help you get your blog started without spending your money on a premium theme.

June

June Wedding Theme

The June theme is a free theme that is used by photographers and creative professionals. This would make a great theme if you’re planning on setting up a gallery site. This theme has custom post types, custom widgets, JQuery Slider and etc. The theme is developed by FabThemes and at the time of this writing it has over 129 reviews.

Weddings

It has a home page slider, to display wide images of the special day. This theme does have a premium version but you can download it for free.

Recommended Plugins for Wedding Blogs

A plugin adds funcionality to your blog. If you have never worked with plugins before, here’s a the Complete Guide to WordPress plugins which will help you learn the basics that you need to get started using them.

The right plugin can be the difference between making it easier to grow your blog. For instance, I use the Social Warfare Plugin on my blog, this plugin makes it easy for people to share my content on social media sites.

As you start writing amazing content, you want your content shared. Remember, the more eyeballs on your blog, the better chance you will have to start making money with your blog.

No love or shares from your readers, you’re going to have an uphill battle to grow your blog.

Yoast SEO: This plugin is vital for helping you SEO (search engine optimize) your blog posts. When you start writing content, you want to make sure that you’re writing for both the search engines and your readers. Here’s a great SEO guide to help you start learning everything you can about SEO.

Don’t stop learning everything you can about keyword research and content writing. Your blog is dependent it.

Akismet: This plugin will help you combat spam on your blog. As your blog starts to grow, you will start to notice that you will start getting a bunch of spam. I’ve created a step-by-step tutorial on how to setup the Akismet plugin.

RSVP: This plugin makes it easy for your guests to RSVP online.

Caution: Don’t overload your site with a bunch of plugins. Add the bare minimum as too many plugins can cause your site to load slowly.

How to Start Writing Content With The Right Wedding Keywords

The heart and soul of a blog is the content. If you can provide your readers with amazing content, then you’ve won half the battle. Now this doesn’t mean that you can write about just anything.

Your blog is brand new. This means that you need to take the time to find long tail keywords with a low KC score if you want any chance in hell to rank on the first page of Google.

I know that this doesn’t make any sense. Check out my Long Tail Pro review to see how I do keyword research for my blog. It will help you get a better understanding of how to start finding the right keywords to get started with your blog.

Here’s 10 Low Competition Keywords

Finding low competition keywords can be a challenge for new bloggers. I didn’t realize the importance of keywords until just this year for my blog.

I’ve quickly found 10 low KC wedding keywords that you can either start writing your content. Or you can use these keywords and brainstorm even further to come up with a bigger list.

Remember, you’re going to need a lot of content if you want your blog to become a success.

All these Keywords have a KC score of less than 30:

  1. Wedding blog post ideas
  2. Wedding photography blog ideas
  3. Witty wedding advice
  4. Wedding planning services
  5. Gay wedding blog
  6. Funny marriage advice
  7. Wholesale wedding dresses
  8. Wedding Dresses Sand Diego
  9. Lesbian Wedding Blog
  10. Chinese Wedding Blog

This list should help you start brainstorming for more blog post ideas πŸ™‚

Great Wedding Blogs to Network With and Be Inspired

Sometimes it’s a lot easier to stay motivated and get inspired when you can check out other bloggers in your niche. This doesn’t mean that you copy their content or steal their images. It just means that it will help you come up with blog content ideas.

Once you’re ready to start working on the growth part of your blog, you can even reach out to them to see if they accept guest posts. Check out my blog post on how to get started guest posting.

I’ve personally been using guest posting to help me grow my blog. It’s a great way to get your blog in front of a blogger who is bigger than you are and start getting known as an authority in your niche.

Style Me Pretty – This blogger is all about all things pretty. They help couples plan the wedding of their dreams. You’ll find some of the best wedding vendors as well as tips and tricks to help you find the latest trends from the runway.

Southern Weddings – Are you planning a southern wedding? This blog will help inspire brides through artful storytelling. You’ll find bow ties, mason jars, biscuits and monograms on their blog. Oh and they also have some amazing photography on their blog which will help inspire you and give you some ideas for your blog.

Bo-Ho Weddings – Boho Weddings is a blog that was started by Kelly Hood who is an award winning wedding planner and blogger. You’ll find fun, inspirational and informative advice that will help couples. Kelly loves weddings and considers herself a wedding obsessive.

You will never run into a shortage of wedding blogs you can turn to for motivation and inspiration. All you have to do is go to Google and type in “wedding blogs” and at the time of this writing, over 778,000 results came back.
