How to Avoid Blogger Burnout And What to Do Instead

October 24, 2017 by Susan Velez

Last updated on August 1st, 2018 at 06:49 pm

Is blogger burnout real? Yes it is, because of it, I almost quit my fifth blog. That would’ve royally sucked and I am glad that I didn’t give in to it.

how to avoid blogger burnout

Today, we are going to be talking about blogger burnout. You might not think that it’s real, but it is.

As a blogger, you’ll be faced with the temptation to quit in the early stages of your blogging career.

Most people give in to that temptation, because it’s much easier to go back to the norm.

This is why it’s extremely important to have a huge WHY or goal.

If your blogging goals aren’t big enough, you’ll end up quitting.

Blogging is hard work and you’re not going to see any money right away. So it’s up to you to have a big enough why to get through the early stages.

What Is Blogger Burnout

I am not really sure if blogger burnout is a real term or not.

However, at one point in my blogging journey, I felt like I was always burnt out.

At the beginning stages of growing this blog, I went through a small phase where I didn’t want to do anything.

There were days when I didn’t want to touch my blog. There was always something that needed to be done and I found myself spinning my wheels.

You know those days when you think that you’re being productive, but you’re actually not getting anything done. That was a pretty much typical day for me in the beginning.

At one point I almost threw in the towel on trying to grow my blog.

As you know, I am currently a WordPress freelancer who is trying to grow this blog into a full-time business so I can stop freelancing.

It’s definitely a lot of work trying to grow this blog while freelancing.

How To Avoid Blogger Burnout

If you’re a new blogger then you know that there’s always so much to do.

You have to write new posts on a consistent basis, reach out to bloggers for guest posting opportunities, create pins for Pinterest, create YouTube videos and make time every morning for blog commenting.

Wow, it’s enough to make your head spin.

I mean how does a one person show make time for all these tasks and actually get things done?

Plus, how do you stay motivated when no one is reading your blog?

I know what you’re thinking, I don’t work on my blog full-time.

Well don’t worry, I don’t either and I am going to share with you how to avoid blogger burnout so you keep working on growing your blog slowly.

I want you to reach your goals. The only way that you won’t reach them is if you throw in the towel and call it quits.

How I Almost Quit

I’ve already told you about my past blogging mistakes of how I’ve started and quit before.

As you know, I am not a business savvy person and this whole entrepreneurial journey is new to me.

I am a type A personality person who always jumps in head first and then asks questions later. This can be bad, especially, when I am still learning how to grow my blog.

When I first started blogging, I was spending way, way, way too much time online. I would wake up at 3:00 a.m. just to get several hours in on my blog before I started working on my freelance business.

Then I would try to work on my blog throughout the day while working for my freelance clients.

Long story short, I wasn’t accomplishing anything. I was everywhere and I wasn’t getting anything done.

I finally took the time to start listening to the ProBlogger podcasts and it was one of the best decisions I made.

After a few days of listening to his podcasts, I sat down and created my weekly blogging duties.

What A Relief

After creating my weekly blogging duties using Asana and Trello, it helped me become more productive. The best part is that I now feel like I have a life.

As new bloggers, it’s so easy to get confused by all the information online. We think that everything needs to be done today.

However, I am here to tell you that NOT everything is important. Yes I know that you want to grow your blog and start seeing traffic.

Nothing is worse than writing a new blog post and having no one reading it. However, all new bloggers go through that phase.

No one starts a blog and then has tons of visitors the day that they hit publish. At least I know that I didn’t.

You can’t do everything in a day. It takes time to grow your blog and if you try to do too much, you’re going to burnout.

You need to take time off and walk away from the computer.

Don’t worry, your blog won’t fade away into the blogosphere if you’re not working on it 24/7.

Plus when you get back on your computer, you’ll be much more productive.

What To Do Instead

I know that you started or are considering starting your blog because you want to earn passive income and create a different lifestyle for yourself.

We all do, otherwise we wouldn’t work this hard on our blogs.

No, I am not saying that you should put earning money first. You should want to genuinely help your readers improve themselves in one way or another.

If you need help understanding WordPress, I’ve compiled a great list of WordPress tutorials on this blog that will make it easy for you to understand WordPress better. If you’re ready to rock your WordPress blog, then be sure to visit my WordPress tips to help beginners..

However, no matter how much work you put into your blog today, it’s NOT going to grow overnight. It takes time to grow a blog, it takes some of us longer than others.

The best thing that you can do for yourself is to take it slow. We all want those instant overnight results, however, it just doesn’t happen with blogging.

Focus On The Important Stuff

Sit down and find out why you started your blog. Doing so will help you determine what’s really important. Maybe you want to grow your email list like I do.

If so then you need to start focusing on those tasks that will help you grow your subscribers.

Maybe you want to get more likes and shares.

Be sure you’re using a social sharing plugin that makes it easy for others to share your content.

Work on your important A tasks everyday. Don’t focus on anything else, while working on those critical tasks.

Look I am not saying that you’ll never spend time on stuff that is not important. I still do because it still helps me grow my blog.

However, I now focus on the most important stuff on my blog the first thing in the morning. I always make sure that the important stuff is taken care of everyday.

Once the important stuff is done, then I can focus on my B tasks. The tasks that are NOT that important, but still need to be done to grow my blog.

Don’t Go Insane

I’ll be the first to admit it, I tend to go crazy and do everything by myself. I’ve only outsourced one thing since starting my blog.

Most of us don’t have the money to hire virtual assistants when we get started online.

This means that we have to do everything by ourselves. If you can afford to outsource some tasks, then you’re already ahead of the game.

A word of advice is that you don’t want to neglect your health just to grow your blog.

Be Willing to Invest In Yourself

If you don’t know something, be willing to invest in yourself. I had no clue how to get started with Pinterest when I started, so I purchased this course to help me out.

I also picked up this affiliate marketing course to teach me things that I didn’t know how to do. Does it mean I wasted money?

Nope not at all, it actually saved me time and I know that I’ll earn my investment back after a while.

You can’t be scared to invest in yourself as you’re learning to grow your blog. Most people who are new to blogging refuse to spend money on anything.

They think it’s a waste or they can find what they need online.

While it’s true, almost anything you need can be found online. However, if you’re serious about turning your blog into a business, you need to treat it like a business.

You can’t always do everything for free. The first thing you need to do is move from a free platform to a self-hosted WordPress blog.

Final Take Away

Growing a blog is hard, I am not going to lie.

I don’t think I work this hard on my WordPress freelance business. So why do I do it?

Well I love blogging and I know that eventually, my hard work will pay off. It may take 2 years or more, but as long as I don’t quit, I know that I’ll achieve my goals.

Keep working towards your goals a little everyday. Don’t neglect your health or your family just to work on your blog.

As long as you work on the important tasks whenever you turn on your computer, you know that you’re eventually going to reach your goals.

    Hey Susan,

Every blogger has encountered this blogger burnout. When I started my blog 5 years ago, I was about to quit because of not getting enough traffic.

It’s not just about that, more people are leaving this blogosphere because they’re not able to build their business.

There are millions of blogs running on the web but not everyone is making a living out of them.

The best thing is to set the daily routine.

    Thanks for bringing this up.

    Hi Ravi,

You’re right a daily routine is a must. That’s actually what helps me with my blog.

I know what I am going to be working on everyday. We just have to get into the habit of working on our blogs everyday. Overtime, we’ll look back and see what we created.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.

Hope you have a great day πŸ™‚

    Hello Susan,

    Great information.

Blogger burnout, writers block, etc., they are all the same.

That is the feeling that your hard work is not paying off as it should.

When traffic is not forth coming, when no one gets to read your awesome well written contents, when you fail to rank well on Alexa, when you dont make money blogging.

These are the few out of many factors that may make us want to quit.

Reading a lot online and offine is a great way to curtail such feelings.

Another great way to do so is what you’ve said. – Taking it slowly. One thing after another.

Remember that Rome was not build in a day so taking it slowly is the key.

Thanks for dropping this great info.

    Do have a nice day.

    Hello Susan,

    Good shout over here πŸ™‚

We all cross over this part in our initial days of blogging, the burnout effect and seriously it pained a lot.

I was like you, when I started of my blog, then I was lost in the middle, no where to go, do not know who to contact or
ask for help, money was stuck and it was not turning in for me.

Yeah there were things that I was doing totally wrong. I was selfish, I was just running after making money and I was caught
up inside my blogging bubble. Yeah in blogging world one need to establish a network so that people can know us and
what are we up to, if one is not indulge in networking surely they are facing a burnout from their own blogs.

Blogging is all about commitment and passion, apart this is work from home job but it needs a lot of hard work to get us
a lot of money and make our own stand in the crowd. If we want to be special then we need to act special and smartly.

Thanks for these helpful insights πŸ™‚

    Have a great day ahead.

    Hey Susan,

What a good post. You have very well written as usual.

It’s all about patience. Being patient is super key; if you have a new blog, shift your focus away from making money because it takes month may be years to set up it, as a beginner.
As a newbie you should focused on your blog , make connection with other bloggers. develop the writing skills., guest posts on other blogs in your niche, engagement with other peoples. These are the great way to avoid blogger’s burnout.

    Thanks for sharing Susan πŸ™‚

    Hi Maria,

You’re definitely right patience is the key, especially while we learn everything else. Totally agree that new bloggers shouldn’t focus on the money, otherwise they will get discouraged.

We need to understand that it takes time to grow a blog. It’s important to focus on other tasks while our blog grows.

As long as we’re consistent with our daily tasks, then eventually those results will come.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by Maria, hope you have a great weekend πŸ™‚
