How Often Should You Blog to See Quick Growth

December 26, 2018 by Susan Velez

Last updated on June 6th, 2020 at 06:00 am

As a new blogger, you may be wondering “how often should you blog and what’s the fastest way to grow your blog?” Today, I am going to share exactly what I’ve learned from blogging for over 2 years on this blog. But first, let me tell some of the things that I’ve learned.

how often should you blog

Two Things I’ve Learned Posting On Your Blog

As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been posting on this blog for two years now, I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. I wanted to share four things that I’ve learned and am implementing on my other blog that I just started this month.

#1 Keywords Play An Important Part

By now you know the importance of knowing your audience and writing to a targetted audience. But do you realize that the keywords you’re using in your posts can be the difference between waiting years before making money online?

When I started this blog, I made the mistake of chasing those keywords that get tons of searches every month. While that’s great, the thing you need to realize is that those types of keywords tend to have tons of competition.

This means that as a new blogger, it will be impossible to get any traffic from those keywords. At least, not until you start to see an increase in your blog authority.

If you want to have a better chance of seeing your blog quicker, start focusing on those low hanging keywords that don’t have a lot of competition.

#2 Choose A Niche You’re Passionate About

If you really want to succeed as a blogger it’s important to choose something you’re passionate about. I know that a lot of people are told to choose a profitable niche.

But take it from me, you won’t be able to succeed in a profitable niche if you don’t enjoy the process of writing about it.

My Experience: I a different blog about 3 months ago and wrote 15 articles in that niche. I’ve realized that I only chose that niche because it showed good potential for earning money.

I also realized that I hate that blog and I’ve had so much trouble writing content for it. In fact, I haven’t touched it or logged into WordPress for over 2 months.

With my new blog that I started this month, I chose a niche that I know something about and enjoy. In just 20 days, I’ve written 16 articles and it doesn’t feel like work.

I’m already starting to see traffic from it on Bing and my rankings are starting to climb. It won’t be hard to keep adding content to it, because I enjoy the topic.

The best advice I can give you is to choose something that you’re interested in or want to learn more about. Otherwise, you’ll get bored with the topic and there’s a good chance that you will stop working on it.

At least that’s been my experience with starting a blog based on profitability only. Oh, and if you want to see success faster, avoid the make money online niche. There are a lot of untapped niches that you can see success in faster.

#3 Importance of Consistency in Blogging

Once you’ve decided that you want to earn a living online as a blogger, you’re going to need to write a lot of content. You’ll want to create a blogging routine that you can stick with.

Everyone’s opinion will vary when it comes to how often should you post content. Don’t worry, I’ll be sharing what I am doing on both of my blogs and what I’ve experienced from my writing habits.

The most important thing to realize is that the frequency of blogging will vary from blogger to blogger. What works for me, may not work for you.

Create a blogging schedule that you can maintain. It doesn’t matter if that’s 2x per week or 3x per week. If you’re serious about growing your blog using SEO and creating a profitable business, you should be posting new content at the minimum once per week.

#4 How Long Should You Blog Posts Be?

Back in the day when I had my very first blog, the average post length was 500 words. In fact, there were tons of article directories like Ezines, Articles Base and etc.. These sites would accept articles as long as they were 250 – 500 words long.

Well today, I don’t think those article directories exist. If they do, I haven’t paid any attention to them.

The days of writing short 500 words and getting SEO traffic are gone. Today, you’ll need to focus on writing content that is at least 1500 – 2500 words long.

You don’t want to just keyword stuff your article or write a bunch of fluff. Instead, you’ll want to focus on answering everything that you can about the topic you’re writing about.

Don’t focus too much on word count, if you’re answering everything on a topic, you won’t have a problem writing articles that are long enough to rank on Google. The downside is that you’ll need to wait a while to get top rankings on Google.

For instance, take this article. I am sharing what I’ve learned about starting and working on my blog in the past two years.

Then I’ll share the exact process that I’ve been using to grow this blog. Hopefully, this will give you an idea of how often to update website content.

How Often Should You Blog and What I’m Doing

how often should you post content

Now that I’ve shared what I’ve learned in two years, let me share what I’ve been doing with both of my blogs.

This blog, which I’ll refer to as Blog A (340 posts) my second one which is Blog B (16 blog posts). This one is in a very competitive niche which is blogging and making money. My second blog is in the pet niche and I’ve chosen a less competitive niche.

I’m going to share how many blog post per week I write on each blog and the type of results I’ve been seeing.

Keep in mind, Blog A is two years old and has a DA of 32, while Blog B is 20 days old and has a DA of 0.

How Many Blog Posts Per Week

For Blog A I currently write 3 blog posts per week and for the past 8 months, I’ve really been focusing on improving my SEO for it. I went on a content blitz for 5 months where I was basically posting content daily Monday – Friday and sometimes Saturday.

Those 5 months were challenging, but I wanted to get a lot of content out that was focused on low competition keywords. I used this keyword tool, which I absolutely love and would write an article every day.

Before I started that content blitz, I had over 100 articles on my blog. However, all those articles were focused on high competitive keywords that I wrote at the beginning.

So I figured it was time to build up my archives with content focused on keywords that I could actually rank for.

One thing that I can tell you about doing that is that you’ll quickly wear yourself out. You don’t want to blog daily, because you still have to give yourself time to promote.

Since I’ve been blogging for over 2 years, I have a system down of what needs to be done after hitting publish. I’ve written a checklist to help you out if you need it.

Blog B I’ve written 16 articles in 20 days. There have been days when I’ve written 2 articles in one day and then a few days when I don’t write any.

For a new blog, you want to get a lot of quality content written as quickly as you can. It takes a while to start seeing traffic from Google, so the sooner you can plant the seeds, the quicker you’ll start seeing your harvest grow.

Should You Blog Every Day?

I can tell you that blogging every day is a lot harder than you think it is. You’ll get burnt out and your neck and shoulders will start to hurt. At least that’s what happened to me.

If you’re a brand new blogger and you don’t have any content on your blog. There’s nothing wrong with blogging daily, in fact, I think it’s a great strategy.

Take 1-2 months and write as many high-quality articles as you can. This will help you build up your archives so you’ll have content you can promote. Plus the more content you have on your blog will eventually bring you more traffic via SEO.

Make this a short-term strategy, otherwise,e you’ll get burnt out and quit. Your blog is NOT going to grow overnight and it’s hard to blog every day.

Plus you might find yourself struggling with writer’s block if you’re publishing new content every day. Blogging is a marathon NOT a sprint and you don’t want to get burnt out before you see results.

How Often Should You Update A Blog?

Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. The truth is that you need to find what works for you and just do that.

Everyone’s schedule is different and some people have more time to dedicate to their blogs than others. However, at the bare minimum, you want to be updating your blog at least once per week. If you can do more, then do that.

Here’s how many posts you’ll have at the end of the year with:

  • 1 post per week: 52
  • 2 posts per week: 104
  • 3 posts per week: 156
  • 4 posts per week: 208
  • 5 posts per week: 260
  • 6 posts per week: 312
  • 7 posts per week: 364

The blogger that stays consistent will see growth with their blog. Here’s a great podcast that will put growing a business into perspective for you.

As long as you’re doing things properly by choosing the right keywords, not trying to game the system and promoting your content.

You will eventually see growth with your blog, it’s virtually impossible not to. You need a lot of content to succeed if you’re trying to grow via SEO.

If you want to see how much content you need, go to any successful blogger’s blog and look through your content archives. One thing you’ll notice is that they’ve been blogging for several years and most of them will have written hundreds of articles.

This should give you an idea of how much content you’ll need. It’ll also show you that Google prefers to rank older content.

What Are The Best Days to Blog?

I know that a lot of new bloggers want to know what the best days to publish new content on their blogs? I’m sure this has been answered, but the truth is that I’ve NEVER worried about this.

When it comes to posting content on my blogs, I’ve just created a schedule that works for me and hit publish on those days.

  • Blog A: I post new content on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays.
  • Blog B: I’ve been publishing content whenever I can and am trying to get to 30 published posts as quickly as possible.

I think of my blog as a garden and the content as a seed. It takes a while for vegetables to grow. It takes tomatoes 80 days to grow.

If you plant them today, you wouldn’t see them tomorrow. Instead, you plant them and just water them and know that eventually,  you’ll have some beautiful tomatoes in your garden.

That’s how I like to think of my content. I know that if I publish content, in 3-4 months, I can expect to start seeing that content start to bring me traffic.

Of course, it depends on the competitiveness of the keyword. Sometimes, I can get a post to bring me traffic sooner if I spend more time promoting it.

But overall, I know that if I write it today, eventually that post will bring me traffic. It doesn’t matter whether I hit publish on Monday or Saturday.

Don’t worry so much about what days of the week are best to publish your content. Instead, just hit publish and promote that content.

Remember, it takes time for Google to send you traffic and that’s what your goal should be. The longer you wait to get your content out there, the longer it will take to harvest your profits.

How to Succeed With Blogging

The most important thing you need to keep in mind when blogging for business is that you’ll need to write content on a consistent basis.

Your ideal blog post frequency isn’t as important as your consistency. Yes, you’ll grow faster if you can write more often because Google loves websites that put out great content on a regular basis.

But you can still have success online if you can only publish one post per week. Just don’t expect to grow as fast as someone who writes daily or more than once per week.

Do what works for you and stop stressing it so much. If you have time, spend a month or two on a content blitz as I did.

That will help you grow your archives and then eventually, you’ll reap the rewards from Google.

Most new bloggers will start a blog excited to make money because they read someone’s income report online. They’ll write 10-20 articles and then quit when they don’t see any profits.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot that goes into growing a blog. Some niches grow faster than others, but if you’ve chosen a niche that you love and is profitable, just keep working at it.

Final Take Away

So many people make blogging look easy. Yes, it’s easy to set up a blog, in fact, you can use this tutorial to set one up in the next 10 minutes. If you don’t want to make as many mistakes I’ve made, then check out this #1 recommended training for beginners.

The hard part about blogging and making money is growing your blog. You need to learn how to get targetted traffic if you want to make money. This is best done by choosing the right keywords and writing content around that topic.

You also need to use social media like Pinterest to focus on right now traffic while you wait on Google to start sending you traffic.

It takes time and this is why so many people quit. They don’t realize how much hard work goes into growing a blog. Once they do, they’re NOT willing to work this hard for free until they start seeing profits.

Don’t be one of those who is being misled into thinking that blogging is easy. It’s not, but I can tell you if you stick with it, you can create a profitable business that will provide you the freedom you’re looking for.
