Amazing Tips to Help You Stay Motivated As A New Blogger

September 30, 2018 by Susan Velez

If you’re a brand new blogger, chances are you’re overwhelmed by everything that goes into growing a blog. Hopefully, these tips to stay motivated will help you keep putting one foot in front of the other until you reach your blogging goals.

tips to stay motivated

It’s not as easy as people say it is. If you’re like me then you’re not the most patient person.

In fact, I suck at being patient. I guess that’s why I’ve failed at blogging before more than once.

I got bored with the niches I chose and I was always looking for something new.

How to Stay Motivated As A New Blogger

Staying motivated is hard. Before I tell you what has helped me, first let me tell you a little about why I got started. If you’ve been considering starting a blog, but not sure how to do it.

Head on over here to follow my step-by-step tutorial that will get your blog up and running in just 5 minutes.

I started this blog to share my WordPress and blogging knowledge with you. Now, I don’t claim to be an expert in either, but I have over 8 years of working with WordPress.

I’ve been working as a WordPress freelancer for over 2 years and figure that it’s time to share my knowledge with beginners who want to start a blog. As you know, I am working towards becoming a full-time blogger so I can walk away from my freelancing business.

If this is your first time here on this blog, you can read my story.

Why I Started This Blog

blogging is a career

The main reason I started this blog is that I want to be able to leave my freelancing gig.

I love freelancing and working with WordPress. But the truth is that I am tired of trading hours for dollars.

My goal is to build this blog into a profitable business so I can walk away from freelancing. I want a piece of the Internet passive income lifestyle.

Now I know that I’ll have to continuously work on this blog. I know that there’s no such thing as complete hands-off passive income.

However, it will be nice when this blog is able to support me and my partner.

Imagine me being able to tell my partner that she can quit her job and we can finally travel a little bit.

After all, that’s the great thing about the Internet lifestyle. My MacBook Pro will make it easy for me to go where ever we want.

Plus I’m not getting any younger (none of us are). This blog is my retirement plan. I don’t plan on getting any big inheritance, so I have to work my ass off now to set myself up for the future.

Although it is going to take work to get to that point. It doesn’t mean that you can’t do it, but listening to motivational podcasts like this one and this one can help you stay on the path to reach your goals.

Amazing Tips to Help You Stay Motivated As A New Blogger

I know that it’s hard to blog when you’re not making any money, not getting any shares or readers. We all start our blogs from zero.

I’m no different than you, except that I’m stubborn. I refuse to make the same mistakes I’ve made in the past. I’m going to share some blogger motivation tips that I think will help you even when you’re not getting the results you want.

What’s Your Why?

I truly believe it’s possible to make money from a blog. Plus I know that I don’t want to keep freelancing for my clients.

Now that I’ve told you why I started my blog, can you tell me why you started yours?

If you can’t answer that question, chances are you’ll quit when you don’t see the results you want.

Your why has to be big enough to motivate you when you’re NOT getting any readers.

So be sure that you write down your WHY. Put it in front of your computer and look at it whenever you feel like quitting.

One of the best blogger motivation tips I can give you is to have a HUGE WHY.

You’re more likely to keep at it, even when you’re not seeing the results you want.

Choose A Niche You’re Passionate About

We hear it all the time, choose a niche you’re passionate about. But what does that really mean?

All I can say is what can you keep blogging about, even when the money or readers are coming? What do you like talking about and can seem to talk about forever?

Everyone has something that they love to talk about. Heck, you can even share your own experiences, that’s what I do on this blog.

Hopefully, what you’re passionate you can monetize.

I’ve started blogs in the warts niche, junk cars niche and etc.

All those blogs were started just because I wanted to make money online. I was able to make money from a few of the blogs.

However, every time I sat down to write a new post, I struggled. It took me forever to write something new.

I never updated those blogs on a regular basis. Because every time I sat down to write, it was a chore. It wasn’t fun to write on those topics.

With this blog, I love what I do. Yes, I still get unmotivated when no one comes by and visits. Or when I check my Google Analytics and see how slow my growth is.

I would be lying if I’d say that I never get unmotivated.

On those days that I’m feeling unmotivated, I take the time to read my why and remember why I started this blog.

Then I do all I can to keep moving forward one step at a time. I remember that we all started from zero and it’s up to me to grow it.

After all, the only way that my blog will grow is if I continue to take daily action.

Take It One Step At A Time

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you’re first starting your blog. There’s so much to do where do you start?

When I first started my blog, I was extremely new to social media. I had no clue what I was doing…(sometimes I still feel like I don’t know what I’m doing).

I found myself trying to be everywhere. It was crazy and at the end of the day I had a headache and hadn’t accomplished anything.

[clickToTweet tweet=”Growing a blog is like learning how to walk. You keep putting one foot in front of the other.” quote=”Growing a blog is like learning how to walk. You keep putting one foot in front of the other.” theme=”style4″]

The best thing that helped me was to focus on one task at a time. I no longer try to be on all the social media platforms.

I now use my Google Analytics to help me determine which social media network is sending me the most traffic.

Then I’ll focus on that platform. My other platforms, I automate with Smarter Queue.

Compete Against Yourself

If you’re like me, you’re a competitive person. I love a good challenge.

I guess that’s one of the reasons I love sports. A little bit of friendly competition is never a bad thing.

However, since I don’t want to compare myself to others. One of the things that I do is compete against myself.

At the end of every month, I’ll go into my Google Analytics and compare my stats with the previous month stats.

This helps me see if I was able to beat my last month’s stats. Then I share my blog growth reports with you.

After all, what good would it be if I am just keeping the stats to myself? By sharing them with you, I am holding myself accountable to keep pushing myself on growing my blog.

As I’ve mentioned time and time again. I’m not a traffic expert, learning how to grow this blog has been a whole new ballgame.

It’s exciting and it keeps me motivated to keep working on my blog, even on those days when I don’t really want to.

Yes, it can be discouraging, especially if we think that we’re growing too slowly. We’re our own worst enemy and we need to remember that as long as you’re growing and working, everything is as it should be.

Treat Your Blog Like A Business

When you’re an employee, you have to be at work at a specific time. Usually, it’s the same time Monday – Friday. If you’re like me, then no one tells you what time to work on your blog.

It’s up to you to set up daily blogging duties to help you grow. If you don’t do them, then you have no one to blame but yourself.

One of the things that I do is I show up to work on my blog at the same time every day. Since I’m a morning person, I start my day at 5:00 AM every morning. Except for the weekends.

I’ve had this routine since I started my blog. I show up every day without any excuses such as;

  • The laundry needs to be done.
  • There are dirty dishes in the sink and I need to get to them.
  • I’ve got dirty laundry that needs to be done.
  • I need to run out of the house and take care of some errands.
  • I need to do …

Nope, the morning time is my blog time and nothing gets in the way.

Every morning, I have a plan and know what I’ll be working on every day.

If you have a job, you can’t take time off whenever you want. You have to show up if you want to keep your job. Otherwise, you might not have a job to go to.

This is the same mentality that you should have to your blog. You can’t just show up whenever you want.

I know that it’s harder to show up when you don’t have to punch a clock. Or no one is watching your every move.

It’s so easy to say “it won’t hurt if I just take today off and watch Netflix.”

True, you might think that it won’t hurt. However, if you’ve built up a readership, chances are they are waiting to hear from you.

The last thing you want to do is let them down.

Take A Break

I’ve taken a break, in fact, last week, I was able to take a road trip to Alabama. It wouldn’t have been possible if I hadn’t had my blog posts queued up and ready to go.

There’s nothing wrong with taking a break. However, the only reason that I was able to really enjoy it was because I prepared my blog to ensure that my blog would be updated with fresh content while I was away.

Plus I didn’t really break away 100% from my blog.

I still checked my blog and social media accounts for an hour every morning while on my road trip.

Yes, I enjoyed my time away, but my blog is my business. I’m a one-woman show so I don’t mind spending an hour on my blog even when I am taking time off 🙂

I know that eventually, my hard work is going to pay off.

Create An Editorial Calendar

I love having a healthy number of pre-written posts. This makes it easy for me to take time off whenever I want.

Even though I don’t take a lot of time off, it’s nice knowing that I could if I want.

An editorial calendar will make it easier for you to walk away on those days that you can’t motivate yourself to work.

We all need a break once in a while 🙂

If you’ve batched several articles for months in advance. Your blog won’t suffer while you’re focusing on getting back on track.

This means that you can actually enjoy your time off without feeling guilty.

Having an editorial calendar has been a huge lifesaver for me. I can’t imagine having blogged for a year without using one.

You don’t have to use a fancy editorial calendar. Sure there are plugins that you can use. I just use Google Docs and here’s how my calendar looks like.

my content schedule

It’s very simple and it helps me stay focused on my upcoming content. Plus it helps me strategize my content writing.

I’ve even color coded my editorial calendar on Google Docs to know which content still needs to be proofread.  Which of my posts need to have a social media image created.

It may sound confusing to you, but it works for me.

Final Take Away

Blogging is hard work, heck there’s days that I work harder on my blog than my freelance business. It’s frustrating when you’re just getting started with your blog.

You’re going to have days where you’re not motivated to work.

We all have them. It’s just important to remember to keep taking baby steps towards your goal.

Keep doing those small tasks each and every day. Eventually, you’ll look back and you’ll see the results of your hard work. If you’re just starting a blog, I’ve put together several tutorials that will make the process easier for you.

At least that’s what I choose to believe and that’s why I continue blogging 🙂

    Hi Susan,
You tips are exceptionally great. Unlike the idea of taking short breaks. This will do you more good as it enables you to re-energize yourself and come back with full focus. I have made it a habit of taking breaks at intervals. Having a content calendar is also amazing, because your calendar is like a navigation tool that guides you along the way.

Thanks for sharing. I already schedule it for posting.

    Hi Moss,

You’re right, breaks can be a great way to re-energize so you can get focused again. I haven’t taken any breaks yet, I’ve been on a content writing spree for this blog and my other blog.

I’ll be happy when I can actually slow down and take some time off.

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment and for sharing.

    Have a great day 🙂

    Susan
