So many bloggers say that Pinterest is their bread and butter, yet I have hard a hard time cracking the Pinterest code. It seems like no matter what I do, I can’t get the Pinterest Gods to notice me. Today, I thought I would write a post that gives you an inside look at how I am using Tailwind. If you’ve ever wondered “how to use Tailwind to grow my blog” then this post is for you.
Maybe you have been pinning but haven’t been seeing a return. I understand your frustration, it seems like you’re the only one who can’t figure out how to make the most of Tailwind.
Well, in this post, I am going to share what I have learned after a year of using Tailwind to help me grow my blog.

It’s taken me a while to see the results. But I have finally learned some valuable tips that I think will help you learn how to use Tailwind to help you grow your blog.
What is Tailwind?
If you are new to Pinterest or haven’t really started using it to help you grow your blog, you might now know what Tailwind is. Tailwind is an automated scheduler that makes it easy to share your content and other people’s content.
As bloggers, we know there is always something we can be doing to grow our blogs. Chances are you’re doing everything by yourself because you’re blog is not profitable enough to start outsourcing.
Starting a blog is the easy part. The challenging and time consuming part is when you’re trying to grow your blog and build an audience.

Once you start writing amazing content, you have to focus on getting traffic to your blog. Unfortunately, there is no overnight way to do this.
It takes time to learn which traffic methods work for your blog. So it’s up to you to keep testing new methods to see which ones are actually helping you grow your blog.
Ways to Get Traffic to Your Blog
There are literally hundreds of different methods that you can use to start driving traffic to your blog. Pretty much all the different methods will work. Some will work better than others.
What I recommend doing is installing Google Analytics on your blog before you start focusing on a specific traffic method. This will help you keep track of specific metrics so can stop spending time on tasks that are not producing the results for you.
Chances are you don’t have all day to work on your blog. This means that you need to focus on those traffic methods that actually help you build up your blog traffic.
When I started this blog, I was trying to do too much. I would guest post, comment, create YouTube videos and etc.
In between working on my client’s websites, I was trying to focus on some traffic methods. I finally said that this year was going to be different.
I am putting my head down and focusing on 2-3 traffic strategies and that’s it. Pinterest happens to be one of them since they are the social network that is sending me the most traffic. Oh and yes some of those visitors are turning into subscribers.
So, it’s definitely worth my time to put my time and energy into really learning it. Here’s where my Pinterest traffic stands this month right now.
That may not seem like a lot when you read how other bloggers are getting tons of traffic from Pinterest. That’s why I think it’s so important to not compare yourself to other bloggers.
Because even though these results may not seem fantastic. They are great for me. I’ll continue tweaking my Pinterest strategy and focusing on it as long as I continue to see an upward climb.
If you start using a specific method and are not seeing positive results after a while, it is time to move on and test out another traffic strategy.
Remember, just because someone says that something works for them, does not necessarily mean it is going to work for you. You are going to have to keep testing things out to see what actually works for your blog.
This is Where Tailwind Comes In Handy
As I mentioned above, Tailwind is an automated scheduler that puts your Pinterest on auto-pilot. This is great because you can then focus your attention on other things in your business.
Automated schedulers are great, especially, if you are a one-person blogger who is doing everything by yourself. Chances are if you just started your blog, it is not making enough money to justify outsourcing yet.
This means that you have to do everything. That’s why I am a huge fan of using Tailwind to help me semi-automate my Pinterest strategy.
How to Use Tailwind To Grow My Blog
I started using Tailwind about a year ago and tell you the truth, I didn’t really understand it. I thought that all I had to do was schedule some pins and that was it.
So that’s what I did, for the first year, I just scheduled my pins to go out and I focused on other things to grow my blog. No wonder I didn’t have the best results.
You can’t expect to just schedule a bunch of pins and then leave Tailwind alone. Today, I have a little system in place that is actually helping me grow my blog.
Of course, I am not still getting 100,000 page views from Pinterest. But I am finally starting to see some improvements with my Pinterest traffic.
I wanted to share with you how I am now using Tailwind to automate my business. Again, I don’t focus 100% on using Tailwind, I am pinning some of my pins manually as well.
I’ve heard so many people say that manual pinning can help you improve your Pinterest traffic. I ran across the Pinterest Strategies eBook a while back.
I’m a huge fan of reading and learning from other people’s strategies, because I think that continuing to learn new methods can help me grow.
So I picked up the eBook about 4 months ago. Unfortunately, after reading the eBook, I didn’t do anything with it.
Till now, On January 15 of this month, I have finally started implementing the manual pinning strategy that she discusses in the eBook.
It’s still to early to tell if this is going to make a huge improvement to my traffic. But I told myself that I am going to give it a real shot and test this strategy out.
So for the past few days, I have been spending more time on Pinterest. I can definitely say that just by investing some time on manual pinning, I have been learning a little bit more about Pinterest.
I still don’t know if this is going to help me grow my traffic. You need to be consistent with the strategy and give it a fair shot before you make any drastic changes.
This Works for Me
I am going to share what is actually starting to work for me. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work for you. The best thing you can do is test out different strategies to see which ones give you the best results.
Don’t be scared to test out different strategies. You never know what will work for your blog unless you give it a shot.
My Tailwind Strategy
I no longer schedule my pins several months in advance. I have found it a lot easier for me to schedule my pins no more than two weeks in advance.
The reason being is because I like to make sure that I am continually pinning my popular pins on a regular basis. I wrote a guest post on this topic and you can check it out here.
Semi Loop My Pins
Once I find out which pins are actually driving traffic to my blog. I’ll spend some time making sure that they are monetized correctly and have a call to action on them.
Next I log into Tailwind to find out which of my pins are the most popular. Go to published pins >> your website.
You can filter by the date the pins were pinned.
You will see the pins that are getting a lot of repins. I will choose my top 7 pins that are getting the most repins. After all, these pins have been proven to be popular, so I want to keep putting those pins in front of people.
Another way to find your popular pins.
Most Popular Pins Widget
As soon as you log into your account, you will see a widget that quickly shows you which pins have had the most repins.
pic most repinned widget
Click on it and you will be taken your most popular pins. You will then need to take make sure that you find the pins from our blog.
It doesn’t matter how you find your popular pins, you need to take the time to find them, before moving on to the next step of setting up your semi-loop rotation.
Now before you can schedule those pins, you will want to set the pins on a semi-loop rotation. If this sounds confusing, don’t worry, I’ll explain it as best as I can.
Hopefully, it won’t be so confusing, I’ve been known to ramble on and on and make thing sound so complicated ๐
Setting Up My Semi Loop Schedule
I use Pinterest Group boards to help me keep getting my pins out in front of other people. After all, I don’t want to keep pinning my pins on my own boards.
At the time of this writing, I only have 584 followers. So it won’t do me any good to keep pinning my pins to my own boards.
This is where Group Boards come in handy. You can pin your pins to boards that have a bigger following than you. Of course you want to make sure that you are not spamming the group boards with a bunch of your pins.
Related: 11 Amazing Pinterest Group Boards to Grow Your Blog
Make sure that you’re reading the group board rules before you start pinning your pins.
That’s why I have my pins scheduled for one pin to go out to one group board everyday. It’s a slow growth, but it prevents me from spamming the group board with a bunch of my own pins.
Remember, it takes time to see results from Pinterest. At least I didn’t experience overnight growth.
Let’s Schedule Our Boards
Once you have at least 7 group boards you can set up your board lists. Log into your Tailwind account and go to Board Lists.
This is where you will be creating your semi-loop schedule that will help you promote your 7 popular pins without you having to lift a finger.
Here’s how your board list will look like on a semi-loop rotation. Every group board will be added to the rotation. However, you will cycling your pins through the rotation so that the same pin is never pinned to the same group board on a given day.
By the end of the week, you will have run all 7 pins through all 7 group boards. The next week, you run those same pins through again or you can change them up if you have a pin that has become popular.
Here is what your boards will look like when you schedule the boards.
It may take you a little time to set up your semi loop tables, but once you them set up, you will not have to worry about creating the schedule again. Unless of course you change out one of the group boards.
Make sure that you’re schedule looks like the picture above. You don’t want the same pin going to more than one group board in one day.
Scheduling Your Pins
I have personally found that the best way to schedule my pins for the semi-loop rotation is to save all the pins that I want to add to the semi-loop schedule into the draft mode on Tailwind.
You can do this by going to the published pins on Tailwind and choose your website. You will see the option to Re-schedule this pin. Click on that.
This will save that pin to your Drafts page. Do this step for 7 of your most popular pins. Now you should be able to see all 7 of the pins on your drafts page.
Let’s Set Up Your Automated Scheduler
The next step is to schedule those pins one by one to your group boards. So for your first pin you would schedule it to board Group 1. For example, you will choose the Board List 1 and it has 7 boards attached to that board list. This means that your pin will be going out to all the group boards on that list.
You will want to set up an interval so the same pin does not get scheduled the same day. You only want each pin going to one board everyday.
This pin is scheduled to go out Monday – Sunday at different time throughout the day and to different group boards everyday.
You want to get your popular pins out on Pinterest everyday.ย The scheduler helps you do it slowly so you aren’t flooding the boards with your pins.
Schedule All 7 of Your Pins
Take the time to schedule all 7 of your pins and before you know it, you’ll have all your pins scheduled for the week. After that, all you have to do is take the time to share other people’s pins besides yours.
What’s the Best Time to Pin
I used to pin my pins at all different times of the day. It wasn’t until I realized that Board Booster has a great feature that tells you when your pins get the most engagement. I’m not sure if Tailwind has this feature?
If it does and you know how to find it, please let me know in the comments below.
Everyone is different and my best times may not necessarily be your best time to pin. I suggest that you pin at different hours to see when your pins are getting the most engagement.
How to Find Out Who’s Pinning My Pins
The goal with Pinterest is to create eye-catching pins that people save to their boards. You want people to share your pins everywhere.
Overtime your pins will be on so many other people’s boards and you will start to see traffic to your blog. Hopefully, you have taken the time to find out the paths that people are entering your blog and you have an email opt-in set up so you can grow your subscriber list.
Here’s how I see if my pins are getting engagement.
Using Pinterest Notifications
I personally love using the Pinterest notifications to quickly let me know if my pins are getting any engagement. This is actually how I found out that one of my pins had been stolen.
Because of that experience, I wrote a step-by-step tutorial on how to report a stolen pin incident. Unfortunately, it does happen more often than you think.
Log into Pinterest
Once you are in your account, you can see all your notifications by clicking on the little cloud with 3 dots beside your avatar.
You can quickly see which pins of yours have been saved. Click through each notification and you can see who saved your pins and which board it was saved to.
It’s pretty exciting to see your pins getting getting saved. This means that people are loving your pins and taking the time to schedule them to their own boards.
Other Ways to Use Tailwind
I only covered one method that I use Tailwind to help me grow my blog. I haven’t even touched how I’m using Tailwind Tribes to help me get my pins shared by others.
Covering Tailwind Tribes would require a blog post all by itself. Maybe I’ll write another blog post that shows you how I use Tailwind Tribes later on.
Pinning Manually
As I mentioned above, I no longer let Tailwind do all my pinning. I’ve actually started pinning some of my pins manually. I’m not sure if this has helped me grow my blog or not?
However, after I picked up the Pinterest Strategies eBook, I thought I would give it a try.
I had tried pinning manually awhile back, but I got kind of lazy. Plus I was trying to spend time guest posting, creating YouTube videos and etc.
It was very hard to continue pinning manually while trying to do other things. I’ve finally made it a point to see if manual pinning would help me see growth.
I don’t spend a lot of time on Pinterest, because I am still freelancing. My goal is that I won’t be freelancing by this Summer ๐
Oh and did I mention that I haven’t been pinning manually for a month yet? The eBook is pretty amazing. You can check it out here to start pinning manually.
Although, I use my own little twist to my pinning strategy. But then I always love testing out new strategies with my blog to see what’s actually helping it grow.
How to Use Tailwind to Grow Your Blog
Tailwind is an awesome automated tool and can make your life easier. Just don’t make the same mistake I did and wait several months before you actually start learning the ins and outs.
I can definitely understand why so many people say they love using Tailwind. The best part is that Tailwind is approved by Pinterest, which means that you won’t have to worry about getting penalized by Pinterest for using a scheduler.
Making the Most of Tailwind
There are so many features when it comes to learning how to use Tailwind. The best thing you can do is get in there and start learning. Don’t forget to stop by and keep updated on making the most of Tailwind by reading the Tailwind blog.
No one is ever going to give away all their Tailwind secrets because to tell you the truth. I don’t think there are any secrets.
The only reason that people seem to have success with Pinterest is because they don’t give up pinning their content. It has taken me a while to start seeing my traffic increase from using Pinterest.
Want to know something funny.
I almost quit using Pinterest to help me grow my blog. I thought I was wasting my time, but since I had pre-paid for Tailwind for a year in advance, I figured what the heck.
I’m so glad that I kept pinning even when I wasn’t getting any results. It definitely goes to show that consistency is the key to anything online.
Sign Up for Tailwind Here
Now that you know how to set up your pins on a semi-loop rotation, you’re one step ahead of the game than I was when I first started using Tailwind. I didn’t figure this out until maybe 4 months ago.
Try Tailwind for free by signing up through this link. Then use this method that I just showed you to start getting your most popular pins out in front of people.
Oh and don’t forget to do some manual pinning. Then give it some time.
You’ll be happy when you start to see your blog traffic increase all because you learned how to use one feature of the Tailwind scheduler.
Final Take Away
I don’t care what you have read online about instant overnight Pinterest success. The truth is that it takes time to grow your Pinterest traffic. Yes some people get lucky and have faster success.
Me personally, it has taken me a while to figure things out. I am still continually learning new things and using them to help me grow my blog business.
Whatever you do, don’t give up. I know how frustrating it can be to continue when you’re not getting the results you want. All I can say is that you have to keep testing out different strategies till you find what works for you.
Don’t compare yourself to others because that just causes you to question your results.
Their success has no influence on you. All it tells you is that if they can do it so can you. So keep pinning and keep blogging.
One day you’ll look back and tell everyone about your success.

Hi Susan,
This is a super duper helpful post.
I am slowly gaining tract on Pinterest but know the aforementioned gods of Da P are starting to work with me. Or I am starting to work with them ๐ Either way, when you follow a sound strategy for a minute things will turn for you on the platform.
I see potential with all my travel images. Especially for my travel pages, all of which contain both travel images and articles related specifically to my globetrotting ways.
Ryan
Hi Ryan,
I’ve actually seen some of your images on Pinterest. It does take time to learn how to use Pinterest and develop a strategy that actually works. (at least it has for me.)
Glad to see that you’re finally gaining some momentum.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and share, I appreciate you my friend.
Have a great day ๐
Susan
Thank you for such an insightful post, Susan. I’ve really not experimented much with Pinterest other than to share my posts and graphics, but I’ve always considered it to be much more of a visual network. Guess I was wrong! How do you overcome that and promote your content without spending all day making graphics, or is that a big part of what you’re doing?
Hi Max,
The first time I created graphics, it took me a while to create one. However, now I just use the same Photoshop template over and over.
All I have to do is change out the text and the images, it doesn’t take but a couple of minutes to create a graphic for my blog posts.
I am NOT focused 100% on Pinterest as I don’t want all my traffic coming from just one traffic source. I’ve done that before in the past and it wasn’t pretty.
Let me know if you do get started with Pinterest, I’d love to hear about your experience.
Have a great day ๐
Susan
