When Is The Right Time to Start A Second Blog?

December 21, 2018 by Susan Velez

Blogging on one blog is hard enough, so when is the right time to start a second blog? Well, I’ll share my experience of running multiple blogs and why I think that having more than one can be a good thing.

Your First Blog is Taking Too Long

The first anything you do in life usually takes the longest. Whenever you’re trying to learn something new, it usually comes with all kinds of learning curves. When I started my very first blog several years ago, I had no clue what I was doing.

I thought that this blog would be different. After all, I already knew how to work with WordPress and I had done SEO in the past, what more was there to learn.

Well, after blogging for a full year, I realized that I had been targetting the wrong keywords. I hadn’t paid enough attention to finding the right keywords that I could actually rank for.

I also targetted a very competitive niche, which I knew would take a while to start ranking. Thankfully, I am now starting to see some results and actually making some money.

first blog keyword positions

As you can see, I am finally starting to get some first page rankings for some of my keywords. It’s nice to finally see my rankings climb.

It wasn’t until I started using this tool to help me find the right keywords to write posts on. Then I watched several videos on this site and things started clicking on how to make money online.

I can tell you one thing, most new bloggers tend to make making money harder than it actually is. So if you’re in the same boat as I was and are just writing content and NOT seeing results, I want you to know that things can change.

You may have to tweak and change up your strategy, but it’s totally worth it. Heck, you may even want to start a different blog to see if you can get better results.

Honestly, it’s all up to you. I’ll share why I started my second blog and I’ll even show you how my new site is starting to gain traction and I just wrote the first article on December 5, 2018.

A Look At My New Blog

I actually started a different blog 3 months ago and wrote 16 articles for it. However, I’ve stopped working on that blog because I realized that I wasn’t interested in the niche.

It’s hard for me to write about a topic if I don’t actually care for it. So instead of trying to force things, I started a brand new earlier this month.

It took me some time to find a niche that I was interested in and that can be profitable over time. After doing some searching, I found a niche that gets tons of searches every month and the best part is that I am interested in learning more about it.

At the time of this writing, I’ve written 11 articles for it. After just a short period, I am starting to see some organic traffic from Bing. I’m still not getting any traffic from Google, but I am starting to get some rankings on Google.

Here’s a picture of my Google Analytics that shows that I am finally starting to get some organic traffic from Bing. The direct traffic visits are mostly mine, I didn’t remove myself from Analytics when I started working on the site.

If you’ve been working hard and not seeing results, listen to this podcast, it’s very inspirational.

Why Am I Showing You This?

I’m hoping that this will give you the inspiration to keep going, even if you haven’t been seeing results. If you’re like me, you started your first blog because you really enjoyed the topic. Yes, you want to make money, but maybe you started blogging about so many different topics, that it’s taking you longer to see success?

One of the things that I did differently with my new site, I niched down to a very narrow topic. I honestly believe that’s why I am already starting to see some traffic in a short 15 days.

I haven’t even really done any marketing or created any Pinterest images for my new site. Honestly, I don’t have the time to promote it while I’ve been working on multiple blogs.

My plan is to create 30-50 very highly niched topic articles and I think at the point it will be able to earn some income. I’ll keep you updated on how it’s going and whether or not the site takes off or flops as my other website did.

Have you been thinking about starting multiple sites? If you’ve been thinking about it, I’m going to share some reasons that you might be ready to tackle a different site. I’ll also share some tips on how to get started, the best part is you may not even need to purchase a new hosting account.

5 Reasons You May Want to Start A Second Blog

Your First Blog Is Too Competitive

One of the biggest mistakes that most new bloggers make is choosing a niche that is too competitive. Take this blog, I blog about making money, blogging, and affiliate marketing. Those are extremely competitive and it makes this blog extremely broad.

I honestly think I would’ve done a lot better and seen faster results if I would’ve narrowed down my topics. However, I chose all those niches because that’s what interests me. I love doing research and sharing my personal experiences.

I’ve been in the Internet marketing niche for several years and it’s what I know and feel comfortable with. I knew when I started this blog that it was going to take some time.

I just had no clue that it was going to take over a year to start seeing results. Yes, I probably could’ve built backlinks and done more on my part to grow this blog.

But I made it a point to do things correctly this time around without trying to game the system. I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the past that only caused me to fail and start all over several times.

So I’ve been working hard on building this site up. I can tell you that while I really enjoy the process, it did suck that it took so long to finally start making money.

Maybe you’ve realized that you chose a niche that is too competitive and you want to venture into something that’s easier and doesn’t have as much competition?

If so, then maybe you should consider starting a new digital asset. It doesn’t mean that you need to stop working on your first baby. It does mean that you will need to know how to prioritize your time to get things done.

You Want to Diversify Your Income

I started this blog because I wanted to create passive income streams. My goal is to make enough to allow live a carefree lifestyle and have enough money coming in when we do retire.

When I started I knew that it would take a lot of hard work, but thankfully I love what I do.

Maybe you started your blog with the hopes of supplementing your income? Or maybe you started it because your goal is to walk away from your full-time job?

If your first blog is already making money, then imagine how much more you could make if you had multiple websites? If you can get one blog to make you $2,000 per month.

Don’t you think that you could get a second one to make you money too? Once you have an understanding of what it takes to grow a blog, you know there’s a system to it.

There’s nothing wrong with having multiple sites that make you money. In fact, it’s much safer to have more than one money making money site.

If something happens to your first one when an algorithm change comes around, you still have more that are making you money. This is one of the main reasons that I am working on more than one.

You’re Not Getting Fast Enough Results

Maybe you’ve been working on your blog for over a year and are still not seeing any income. I’m NOT saying that you shouldn’t give it time to see results.

Results don’t happen overnight, but if it’s been 2 years and you still haven’t earned a penny, then maybe it’s time to quit your blog.

I wish I could give you a realistic timeframe of when you should expect to make an income online. But the truth is that everyone and every niche is different.

There’s no one answer for every blog. All I can tell you is that if you continue doing the right things for your blog, you will eventually start to earn.

You’ve Learned A Lot

Most new bloggers have no clue what it takes to run a blog. We start our blogs with the hope or making money from home. When we decide to become an entrepreneur, we realize that there is so much to learn.

Our first blog usually involves a huge learning curve and it seems to take us forever to understand what it takes to grow a blog.

However, after working on your site for several months or years, you’re a lot smarter about what works and what doesn’t. In fact, you’re no longer a new blogger.

You have tons of experience under your belt, which means that you’re less likely to make mistakes on your next one.

I’ve learned so much while working on this blog, I know that I won’t be making those same mistakes on my second one. As you can see, I am already starting to get traffic to it in just 15 days.

It took me over a year to finally start getting organic traffic to this blog.

You Have More Than One Interest

One of the things that I have realized is that a blog that is in a narrow niche tends to grow faster than a blog that is too broad. I’m not saying that you can’t have success with a broad site.

What I’ve realized is that a narrow tight niched blog ranks faster. I’m already starting to see some rankings with my new blog and it’s only 15 days old.

If you have more than one interest, then you may want to start a different site. Not only will allow you to keep your current followers without confusing them.

It’ll also allow you to break up your writing. This is great if you get bored writing about the same topic day in day out. You could write for one blog one day and the next the following day.

Should You Run Multiple Blogs?

I’m not going to lie, running more than blog takes twice as much work. You’re going to find yourself writing a lot of content. If you decide to promote your new blog on Pinterest, you’ll need to create a separate business account to promote your new one.

You don’t want to promote your pins on the same account unless the niches are closely related. My other site is not related to this blog at all.

If was going to promote it on Pinterest, I would need to create a brand new account. That’ means that I would need to spend time manually pinning unless I signed up with another Tailwind account.

I’m not ready to spend money on my new website yet. Maybe later on down the road, once it starts to make money, I’ll consider investing in Tailwind.

Plus, I’m not really sure that the niche would do well on Pinterest. I haven’t seen a lot of pins in the niche on the platform.

If you’re struggling to devote time to your first one, then you don’t need to start a second one. Focus on your first one, check your Google Analytics to see what content people are looking for.

Then spend time writing more of that type of content. Make sure that you’re writing content on low competitive keywords. If you do that, things will change. That’s when I started to see more traffic and more income.

How to Start A Second WordPress Blog

If you’re on the GrowBig Plan or higher on SiteGround then you can start a second blog without buying more hosting. If you’re not using SiteGround, check your hosting service.

Most hosting services will allow you to set up multiple blogs under one account. There’s no need to purchase another hosting account.

All you need to purchase is a new domain name. You don’t even have to purchase a new theme if you don’t want to. I wouldn’t recommend investing a lot of money in your new digital asset.

Instead, I would focus on choosing a very narrow niche that you are interested in. Set up WordPress and start writing articles targeting low competitive keywords.

Write 30-50 articles and give it time to start seeing results. If you chose a niche that isn’t too competitive, you should start to see traffic pretty quickly.

Don’t expect to see results overnight, by now you know that things don’t happen that way online. But hopefully, you’ll start to see your rankings starting to climb like I am on my second site.

second blog keyword rankings

Should You Quit Your First Blog?

That’s totally your call, but what I can tell you is that if you have written SEO optimized articles on your blog, those articles will eventually start to get some traffic.

I have articles that I wrote over a year ago and those articles are starting to get me some traffic. I’m personally NOT quitting this site because I love writing articles for it. Plus I am finally making some money and I know that it will just continue to grow with time.

If you’re blogging on a site that you hate or are just bored with, then maybe it is time to throw in the towel. Here’s an article that can help you decide if you should continue or start fresh.

The only reason that I’ve decided to start multiple blogs is that I want to see faster results. Plus, I want to diversify my income so I have more than one money making website.

Final Take Away

Running one blog is hard enough and two is twice the work. If you’re struggling to write fresh articles for your first one, then maybe you shouldn’t start another one.

However, if you have a system down for your first one and it comes naturally for you. There’s no reason why you can’t apply that same system for your second one.

Since I’ve started running multiple blogs, I don’t really work a lot more than I used to. The only difference is that I spend more time writing for my blogs.

If I am not writing for this site, then I am writing content for my other one. The great thing is that it doesn’t take me long to write a 2,000-word article for this site.

It still takes me a little longer to write on my new niche. I’m hoping that the more I work on it, I’ll get faster at writing the content for it.
