We’re all human, and it’s human nature to think we’re NOT good enough.
We’ve all been guilty of it at some point in our lives. We tend to look at someone else and say “why not me?” Why does life come so easy for them? If you’ve ever had these thoughts about other bloggers, I’m going to help you learn how to deal with blogger comparison.
What Is Blogger Comparison?
Before we can honestly deal with blogger comparison, we first have to discuss what it is. If you’re a new blogger, you may have seen other bloggers income reports.
You’re happy for them, after all you know that it took them a lot of hard work to get there. However…
Deep down inside you’re thinking, why isn’t my blog making money? Then you start to think why did it only take so and so 3 months to make money with their blog?
Now don’t get me wrong, you’re happy that the blogger was able to create a successful blog. But deep down inside you’re kind of envious.

What you don’t realize, is that blogger probably busted their ass in growing their blog. You may not have heard their stories of how they woke up two hours earlier than normal just to work on their blog.
Or how they gave up binge-watching Netflix for months until they were able to grow their blog.
As I mentioned before, starting a blog is easy, growing it is another thing.

How To Deal With Blogger Comparison
Before you can start dealing with blogger comparison, it’s important to realize that you’re struggling with it. You can’t deal with a problem, if you don’t think that you have it.
That’s why they say that you can’t help an addict until they are willing to admit they have a problem.
Ask yourself, do you find yourself constantly reading people’s income reports? If so why?
- Is it because it gives you the motivation to keep working towards your goals?
- Maybe you want to see how much people actually make with their blogs?
- Do You want to know what the possibilities are with your own blog?
- Or maybe you….enter your response here
Everyone has their own reasons of why they enjoy reading other people’s income reports. However, it’s important to realize that just by reading someone’s income reports it’s NOT going to help you make any money. It doesn’t matter how much you want it to.
Stop Reading Other People’s Income Reports
By reading people’s income reports, you are wasting precious time that could be used growing your own blog. If you’re like me, you don’t get to work full-time on your blog.
I actually have to tend to clients in my freelance business. So whenever I work on my blog, I have to focus 100% on the tasks that I want to accomplish for the day.
I am still working towards the day that I can blog full-time and walk away from my freelance business.
However, till that day comes, I need to put food on the table and my freelancing business does that.
We all have the same amount of hours to work within a day. Some of us just at odd hours than others. If you’re serious about growing a blog, you’ll have to find ways to do the tasks that will actually help you reach your goals.
Do you know which goals those are? Have you set any goals for your blog?
The easiest way to deal with blogger comparison is to stop reading income reports. See, if you’re NOT reading people’s income reports, you won’t spend time thinking about why it’s taking you so long to earn money from your blog.
Put Your Head Down and Focus
Look I am not saying that you have to stop reading people’s income reports completely. After all, if they give you the motivation and drive you need to keep blogging, then don’t stop cold turkey.
Just make sure that you’re focusing on getting your daily blog tasks done before you spend time reading other people’s blogs.
You also should have a list of blog activities you do on a daily basis. These tasks can include writing an eBook, networking with other bloggers, writing new blog posts, creating videos, doing blogger outreach for guest posting opportunities or any other possible tasks that will help you grow your blog.
Only you know which tasks are important and will help you reach your blogging goals. Sit down or stand at your desk like I do, since I have a standing desk.
Focus on working on your blog business for an 1-2 hours straight. Turn off all social media, your phone, stop checking your email and just work on your task at hand.
When you apply the focus principle and just focus on one task at hand, you’ll realize that you’re getting more done on your blog than you though possible.
Keep doing this everyday for as long as it takes till you see the results you want in your blogging business.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
It’s so easy to fall into the trap of blogger comparison. We all want to be like our favorite bloggers who already struggled through their journey.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could bypass the struggles and just reach that pot of gold. I mean who really wants to talk about the struggles that bloggers face.
It’s not very glamorous and for some of us, it takes a lot longer than others. Heck this is my fourth blog and so far the longest one that I’ve managed to stick with and write content for on a regular basis.
We all have our own learning curves and struggles to endure. Unfortunately, it may take you a lot longer to create a successful blog before someone else.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to enjoy the journey. That’s one of the main reasons so many people will tell you how important it is to choose a niche you’re passionate about.
See I’ve already written over 60 articles, some of them are scheduled in my WordPress editorial calendar waiting to be published. I love writing my articles in advance, this frees up my time to promote my blog posts.
Not to mention, it made it a lot easier to write my first eBook. If you need help with getting a grasp on WordPress, I recommend you check it out.
Set Goals For Your Blog
One of the easiest ways to stop comparing yourself with other bloggers is to set goals for your blog. When you are working towards your goals, you’ll be able to see your big accomplishments.
Most of us only see the fact that we’re not actually making money with our blogs. Then we get discouraged because we hear about so many other bloggers are actually making money.
Work towards some short term goals with your blog an you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel about your blog.
Create A Blog Growth Video
If you’re the type of person who gets discouraged easily and needs to see fast results. One of the best ways to learn how to deal with blogger comparison is to create a video of your blog.
I’ve had to learn how to deal with blogger comparison too. I mean, I’m human and we all want to see instant results from our efforts.
The one thing that I did when I started this blog is, I created a for my eyes only video. My blog was maybe two months old at the time.
I created a walk-through video of my Google Analytics traffic and statistics and even my email subscribers numbers.
I did this so I could go back after a year of working on my blog, and see how much improvement I’ve made.
Here’s a tutorial that will walk you through on setting up Google Analytics, if you don’t have it installed yet.
This way I can see the continued improvement and growth of my blog.

We’re Our Worst Critics
If you’re like me, then chances are you’re your own worst critic. You work hard on your blog and daily tasks, but you tend to believe that you may not be doing enough.
We all know that there is always something we can be doing to grow our blog. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we should always be doing those things.
Most of us started our blogging journey because of the freedom that it can provide. The last thing we want is to be tied to our computers 24/7.
Sure at the beginning, you’ll have to hustle to start gaining traction for your new blog. When I first started my blog 7 months ago, I was working 10-13 hours per day.
I think most of us have periods when we’re working harder than we should. We do it because we want to start getting visitors and build our email list.
No one wants to keep writing blog posts that no one is reading.
I also worked all those hours at the beginning, because I needed to find my daily rhythm or groove. Now that I have a daily routine of what I do to grow my blog, I am now taking more time off.
I still work on my blog everyday, I’ve just learned how to use my time more effectively.
I’ve also found that by taking more time off, I’m able to accomplish a lot more.
Be Patient
I know that you want to make money with your blog, the sooner the better. In fact, if you made your first hundred yesterday, you’d be a happy camper.
Growing a successful blog takes time. Give yourself some breathing room. Create a blogging schedule that works for you and stick with it.
Start reaching out to other bloggers and start networking. I have to be honest, I need to work on this more. It’s so easy for me to be an introvert and just keep working on my daily tasks.
I’ve made it a point to start reaching out to more bloggers.
It’s important to make connections online. We hear it all the time, yet most of us don’t actually follow through on this type of advice.
We’d rather put our head down and ignore it. That’s what I always chose to do in the past. This time around, I am actually putting myself out there and getting to know other bloggers.
It’s scary and uncomfortable, but hey do you want your blog to grow?
Don’t Quit
It may take you a while to reach your goals. The worst thing you can do is quit. As long as you keep working towards your goals everyday, you will eventually reach them.
I’ve made the mistake of quitting before. Who knows where I’d be if only I’d stuck with it from the beginning. At that point I was blogging in a niche I didn’t love, so I’m sure I wouldn’t have seen the success I desired.
Listen to podcasts that will keep your motivated. Here’s 2 of them that I love listening to:
Ask Pat: Awesome Episode: How to Get More Traffic to Your Blog (with Corrbett Barr) or The Life of A Brand New Visitor
ProBlogger: Awesome Episode: Setting Goals to Grow Your Traffic and Income
Final Take Away
The only difference between someone who has reached their blogging goals and you is that they’ve been doing the basics things each and everyday.
They took the time to implement the basics tasks everyday. They didn’t care if they had visitors or not. They showed up everyday and kept working.
That’s the only way your blog is going to grow. As long as you keep applying the basic tasks, eventually, you’ll start to reach your goals.
Those are the only things that you need to do to learn how to deal with blogger comparison.

Susan
Hello Susan,
What a fabulous article! You really nail it. I remember my initial days of blogging when I was busy with reading the income reports of other bloggers. It only distract you from your goals. I am 100% agree with all of your points and follow them in my real life.
I often see that people have lack of patience and quit in very short span of time. So, Patience is the key to get success in blogging. I also recommend people to don’t compare yourself others. Everybody have some special skills and knowledge. So, everyone is perfect. The main thing is that how you do the things. isn’t it? I hope you agree with me.
Thanks again for this useful post. Have a great day π
Vishwajeet
Hi Vishwajeet,
Totally correct on everything and yes patience is a must have for new bloggers.
Sometimes it can be hard to remember not to compare ourselves with others.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment.
Have a great day π
Susan
Hi Susan,
Oh my god (lowercase g π how did you know I gave up binge watching Netflix for 6 months? LOL!
This was about A1 in terms of my worst mental blocks during lean years. I compared myself to everybody. I would never be as popular or make as much money as Ray Higdon. I could never write posts like Darren Rowse. The list went on. Forever. Finally I decided to be me, and also noted how authentic bloggers stood out big-time. From that point since I was comfy being in my own shoes and creating posts from that space I rarely compared myself to other bloggers. Although I still do at times being human and all.
Great point on the work side of things. Some may think I am really lucky. But when I am up at 11:30 AM last night writing, they probably would rather skip that luck LOL. I do LOVE what I do largely but put in some serious, serious time and energy to create the illusion of being everywhere.
Fab post Susan! Powerful message too. Be you. Let that being bleed through your blog and brand, as it has been here. Loving your blog, brand and clarity around your cyber real estate these days.
Ryan
Hey Ryan,
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and visit my blog, that means a lot especially, since I know you stay so busy. Yeah, most people would say that it’s luck to become pro bloggers. But I know how much it takes, I see you everywhere and it still amazes me.
Most don’t realize how much hard work goes into building a successful blog. I didn’t know how much work it was until I started my own blog.
I am finally starting to get comfortable with letting my personality blend through. Still a work in progress, however, as I continue writing content, I know I’ll get better with it.
Hope you have a wonderful day π
Susan
I love this post Susan and I can relate to this one. I still compare myself to others. It’s so unhealthy because it can really damage your confidence and self-esteem.
I don’t read a lot of income reports but I take a peek at them from time to time. But my focus on not on their money. I look at how they got there. Some bloggers are great at passing on what’s worked for them and there are some that just show the revenue and what drove it.
I posted one income report on my blog…it was the good, the bad, and the ugly. I wasn’t making thousands of dollars a month but I wanted to show the reality of it and how it takes time. I was embarrassed to show that on some months I made about $50 but it is what it is. I still did the happy dance for those 50 bucks though. π
Now I just focus on my work and run my own race. I applaud every blogger who is rocking at it and I say, one day, that will be me. π
Great post Susan. No doubt I’m passing this along!
Cori
Hi Cori,
I agree, those income reports can definitely play with your self-confidence and make you think like you’re not growing enough. Like you, I like reading reports that show what a blogger did to get their success.
You never know when you might be able to get a nugget or two to help you out π
I think it’s great that you’re making money with your blog from affiliate sales. I just made my first one last month and I was doing the happy dance too π
It’s exciting when we start to see results from our blog. I know that we don’t blog just for the money, but it is nice to start seeing an income coming in.
Sounds like you’ve found what’s working for your blog. You’re already a success in my eyes Cori and I think you’re doing a fantastic job.
Have a great one π
Susan
Hi Susan,
You have made a lot of change in your blog. You got me there, I am always read “income report” of great blogger and some time it makes me down.
Thanks
Hi Nobi,
Welcome back, I agree. Reading the income reports can being you down, especially, if you’re just starting out. That’s actually why I don’t read them anymore.
I don’t want to put myself in a situation where I am depressed or start to think that I am doing something wrong.
Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment, hope you have a wonderful day π
