I’m Scared to Start A Blog

April 28, 2017 by Susan Velez

Last updated on October 16th, 2017 at 07:43 pm

I’m scared to start a blog! Unfortunately, this is what runs through most beginners minds when they think about starting a blog. They stop before they even take a chance. If you’re considering starting a blog, but are letting fear hold you back, then I’m going to help you take that leap of faith.

scared to start a blog

I started this blog a little over 6 months ago. I had already failed in several online ventures. Yes, the thought crossed my mind, what if I fail again. However, I didn’t let those thoughts stop me from starting this blog.

I’ve made several blogging mistakes in the past and I’m NOT perfect. I just know what my goals are and that I want to move away from my freelancing business. So here I am again with another blog.

Blogging is NOT easy, heck sometimes I find myself working harder on my blog than my freelancing business. The difference is that I love blogging. I don’t answer to anyone, just myself. I don’t have to worry about meeting client deadlines or anything like that.

If you’re feeling scared, I am going help you overcome the fear so you can just start blogging!

I’m Scared to Start A Blog

Feeling scared to start a blog is natural. You’re putting yourself out there in front of everyone. Some people will love you, some will hate you and try to let you know.

Most of us don’t want to deal with the negativity that can come with blogging. However, the great thing is that you can control your comments on your WordPress blogs through your blog configuration settings.

It’s extremely easy to pre-approve all comments on your blog before they get published. So don’t let the negativity hold you back. Trust me, you won’t get a lot of negative comments, especially, if you’re trying to help others.

If you’ve been scared to start a blog, you may have found yourself asking the following questions. By the time you get done reading this post, you should have the courage to go ahead and just start your blog.

#1 How Do I Get Started?

There’s a ton of information about starting a blog. Back in the day, there wasn’t nearly this much information. While this can be a great thing for people who are new to blogging. It can also be information overload, I mean how do you know who to listen to?

I’ve written a step-by-step tutorial on how to start a blog. Once you’ve got your blog setup, I recommend finding 1-2 successful bloggers that you admire. Stalk them and learn as much as can. Heck if you need to, buy their course.

This is the fastest way to learn the ins and outs of blogging. You’ll learn what to do and what not to do on a daily basis as well as how to be more productive. Of course, if you don’t have the money, you can just learn everything for free. (it just may take you longer)

#2 Should I Start On A Free Blog?

One of the most asked questions is should I start on a free platform. I know that you don’t want to spend money on your blog. It’s hard to spend money on something that you don’t know if it’ll be successful or not.

I mean who wants to spend money on something if we don’t know we’re actually going to stick with it. I recommend sitting down and asking yourself why do you want to start a blog? If you need some help, here’s why I started my blog.

If you’re just doing it for fun and you have no desire to create a business or earn money from your blog, then yes you can start with a free blog.

However, if you know that you are going to monetize your blog. I recommend starting with a self-hosted WordPress blog. I recommend and use WordPress.org and I even wrote a step-by-step tutorial on installing WordPress.

#3 Which Hosting Account Should I Use?

One of the most confusing things that new bloggers struggle with is, which hosting account to use. I use SiteGround as my hosting account. I am on their GrowBig plan. If you only have one blog, which I recommend starting with only one blog.

You’ll be fine with their Startup Plan. When you choose this plan, I recommend paying for the annual subscription. It’ll save you money and you won’t have to worry about paying a monthly hosting bill.

Here are your payment options when you sign up:

  • $3.95 for 12 months: $47.40 for one year of hosting
  • $3.95 for 24 months: $94.80 for two years of hosting. (amazing deal!)
  • $3.95 for 36 months: $142.20 for 3 years of hosting (BEST deal!) This is the payment plan I chose for my blog ๐Ÿ™‚

#4 I’m Not Techie Can I Learn WordPress?

WordPress is scary if you’re just starting out. You’ll hear so many people say that it’s easy to learn. I am NOT saying that you can’t learn it, with time you can.

Just be prepared that it’s going to come with a learning curve. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered, I’ve written some amazing WordPress tutorials that will help you learn the basics of WordPress.

That’s the beauty of starting a blog. You don’t have to know everything about WordPress to get started. So even if you’re not techie, you can figure this out.

If I was able to figure out WordPress I know you can. I’ve been working with WordPress for 8 years and there are still things I don’t know about it. But you know what, you don’t need to know everything to get started.

#5 What Should I Blog About?

One of the most difficult decisions you’ll make when you start your blog is what you should blog about. You’ll hear so many bloggers saying that you should choose your niche and stick with it. However, if you’re new to blogging, you may not know what you want to blog about.

Practice a few types of posts and see what sticks with you. What do you enjoy writing about? Do you love teaching? Maybe you’ve got tips that you can share with your readers to help them accomplish something?

If you’re struggling to come up with ideas of what to write about. Write a few blog posts on potential topic #1 and brainstorm 30 post ideas.

Sit down and write out your blog post. Don’t publish your blog post yet, just see if you actually enjoy writing that type of content. Does it flow easy, do you actually enjoy it?

The most important thing to remember is that it’s going to take a while to grow your blog. You want to choose a niche that you’re passionate about. Don’t make the same mistake I made in the beginning and choose a niche you’re not passionate about.

If you need some ideas for inspiration, read this. This will get your creative juices flowing and help you decide what you want to blog about.

Otherwise you’re going to have a hard time coming up with content on a regular basis. Once you know what you want to blog about here’s a step-by-step tutorial on writing your first blog post.

#6 What If I Fail?

I am NOT going to lie, you might fail. Heck, I failed more than once at blogging. The reason I failed is because I gave up. Look, blogging is hard work. You’re not going to see success right out the gate.

Unless of course you already have a huge following on social media. If you’re like most bloggers and myself, you may be new to social media.

This means that you’re going to have to build your tribe or community of readers who vibe with what you say. It’s going to take time for people to find you.

Plus you’re going to have to get into the groove of finding your voice. I still struggle with this and I’ve been doing this for about 6 months.

My words of advice is just to do it, don’t care what others think of you. Have your goals and your why in front of you everyday, this will help you stay focused.

[clickToTweet tweet=”You won’t fail and if you do, would it be so bad? #WordPress #freetraining at susanvelez.com” quote=”You won’t fail and if you do, would it be so bad? #WordPress #freetraining at susanvelez.com” theme=”style3″]

Just because you fail at something doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. You get up and try again.

#7 What If My Blog Doesn’t Make Money?

I don’t know how you plan on monetizing your blog, however, there are literally tons of ways to make money with a blog. People make money selling ads, using affiliate marketing, offering services, coaching and etc… Or you can write an eBook like my first eBook.

There are literally tons of ways to make money with a blog. That’s why it’s important to have some type of plan of what you want to achieve with your blog.

If you’re new to blogging, it’s going to take some time to make money with your blog. The best advice I can give you is to keep working on your own blog.

Don’t compare yourself to others. I know you’re going to be tempted to, after all many people post their income reports online.

If you start reading other people’s income reports, you’re going to start second guessing your own journey. You’re going to think, why is it taking me so long to make money?

This blogger was able to make money in her first month. I haven’t made a dime from mine.

Stop!

You’re on your own journey and you can’t compare your journey to anyone else’s.

So what if it takes you one year to make $1000/ month with your blog. Imagine being able to make money from your home without having to depend on your day job.

How would that feel to know what you’re in control of your own destiny? Wouldn’t it be amazing to know that you’re creating the future you want for you and your family?

Stick with it, test things out and heck if you need to invest in courses or coaching, then so be it. This is your future you’re building and you can’t compare yourself to others.

#8 What If I’m Not A Good Writer?

This is just an excuse that you’re using to avoid getting started. Look, I am NOT a writer. I don’t think anyone who starts a blog starts out being a great writer.

If you go back to any of the successful bloggers and dig through their blog archives, you’ll notice that they didn’t start out writing fantastic blog posts. It’s going to take time and practice to become a great writer.

The great thing is that the more you do it, the easier it will get. When I first started my blog, it used to take me hours to write one blog post. Now I am getting faster.

Of course whenever I write my tutorials with screenshots, it can take me several hours.

Don’t worry about being a great writer. Just write and try to write 1,000 words each and everyday. Before you know it, you’ll be writing with ease. You’ll be so comfortable in your niche, you won’t have any issues coming up with topics to write about.

#9 Will I Have Time to Blog?

Another thing I hear a lot is that I don’t have the time to blog. While it’s true that our time schedules are different. I can’t pretend to know your situation.

However, if you’ve sat down and written your goals. Only you will know if your why is strong enough. If you’re serious about creating a different lifestyle, you’ll make time.

This may mean that you might have to get up at 3:00 am instead of 5:00 am. Maybe you’ll need to stop watching so much Netflix re-runs.

When you’re not working your day job, spend time working on your blog. We all have the same amount of time in our lives. It’s just a matter of how you choose to make use of that time.

So not having enough time is just an excuse. You’ll find time, especially, if your why is strong enough.

#10 What If My Blog Doesn’t Look Good?

Perfectionism will get you in trouble. It’s easy to get stuck on trying to make your blog look great right out the gate. I’m going to tell you the truth, it doesn’t really matter about your blog design from the start.

I know that you want your blog to look amazing.

The truth is that when you get started, unless you already have a following no one is going to see your blog. So if your header looks like crap, guess what you can fix it.

You don’t have to be perfect right when you launch your blog. Just start writing amazing content people will want to share and hit publish.

The most important thing you want to consider is making it easy for others to share your content.

Final Take Away

Hopefully, one of these questions answered your fear and you realize that it’s possible to start your own blog. Remember, most of us who start a blog are just learning as we go. We suck at writing when we get started, but we keep at it knowing that eventually, we’ll become better.

The only thing that makes a successful blogger different is that they showed up each and every day to work on their blog. They took small steps towards their goals.

    Hi Roy,

You’re definitely correct, you should always know what you want to blog about. Many people make the mistake of starting a blog and don’t know what they want to blog about.

I’ve been there. But then I’ve also seen people start a blog and write a few posts and then finally know what they want to blog about. So either way works, as long as you’re able to figure out what you want to blog about.

It should all get you to your goals. The best thing about blogging is that you can always pivot and twist till you reach your goals.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, have a great day ๐Ÿ™‚

I think this thought of becoming a blogger crosses almost everyone’s mind in a lifetime at least, for variety of reasons. But when a lot of questions like how why and what arises in their mind they let their thought slip away from their mind just because they are not able to cope up with so many questions arising at the same time.
But i am glad you answered them all and even if your answers do not satisfy anyone at least you gave them right the questions in the right sequence to think about and get their answers somewhere else or find it on their own.

    Hey Susan!

Another fantastic post you’ve shared here for people who aims to stat there own weblogs, and you did and amazing job simplifying the fears and how they can quickly go past them.

The truth is many a great blogger started off with these fears but over time, they found courage to actually get past the fears and really make something out of it.

I remember reading plethora blog posts and eBooks too on “how to start a blog” and I promised myself, beating my chest too that I was going to start a blog. Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to month, I didn’t start the blog. But I summoned courage and I finally overcame my BIGGEST fear, the fear of the unknown. I started my blog and it became one of the best place to find blogging and motivation related articles.

However, I feel the biggest fear I was faced with too after starting my blog was “the lack of time”. I had limited time to really work on making the blog go viral but I finally mapped out two hours everyday to churn out great contents for my blog and to promote the posts, which worked magic in driving quality traffic and engagements to the site.

Ma’am, I really appreciate you for taking the initiative to put out this content for bloggers aiming to kickstart their own dream of owning a blog.

    Hi Susan,

This is a great post! I remember when I started blogging (6 years ago), I had all these questions. The one I asked most was “what if I fail”. The fear of failure has held me back from doing projects I want to do. But I’m letting that go and going for it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I admire you for coming back and giving it another try! I wish you all the best!

Thanks for putting this together. I’ve already passed this along!
